Growing up in Portland, Oregon, Matt Groening did not particularly like school, which is what originally turned him towards drawing. In the mid-1980s, he moved to Los Angeles and started drawing a comic strip named "Life in Hell" which eventually became published in the newspaper where he worked. In 1988, James Brooks, looking for a filler in the television show "The Tracy Ullman show", turned towards a framed "Life in Hell" strip on his wall and contacted Groening. The animated shorts that Groening created were "The Simpsons".

The "gifted school" is pretty hilarious, what they are doing with Mr. Skinner's voice and animation shows why this was revolutionary prime time animation for 1990, and Homer blowing past Bart's sentimental pleading is some top level expectations setting.

as an actual quoteunquote gifted child who constantly acted out and often felt like a fraud in these kinds of classes myself, i've always been pretty fond of this one. i was extolling the virtues of that trolley problem bit in THE GOOD PLACE the other week, needless to say The Simpsons Already (Kinda) Did It with this nightmare sequence.
