In the year 1999, five young men return to Earth after a lengthy space voyage, only to find a planet left in ruins from a worldwide nuclear war. The five men escape from the clutches of the Galra Empire and crash-land on the planet Altea. There they find allies with a young princess and her guardian, who ask them to help them fight the Galrans using the legendary Golion robot.

The Galran Empire has launched a full-scale invasion of Altea, and the group needs to form Golion in order to stop them. But they must first retrieve the keys to the 5 lions, located beneath the castle in the crypt of the late King Raimon.

After being defeated by a Beastman with only 4 lions; Chief, Quiet, Moody, and Hothead return to the castle to find the missing key to the Black Lion. Only then can Golion be re-formed, as well as stand a chance against the Beastman.

As Emperor Daibazaal sends the Beastman "Deathhell" to Altea to destroy Golion, Fala & co. attempt to rally support for their fight from the Altean citizens, who have been in hiding since the Galrans attacked their world years ago.

Honerva the witch decides to personally kill the Golion team. After capturing Moody, Quiet challenges her to a duel of swords and sorcery. Little does he know that Honerva brought a Beastman with her.

A Beastman is sent to Altea to take advantage of Golion's absence. Fala wants to fill the late Shirogane's shoes and pilot the Blue Lion, whether the others like it or not.

Fala undergoes some rough combat training with Moody, a mysterious white-haired man arrives when she is injured during sparring. He is convinced to stay on Altea and become a possible replacement for Fala as the Blue Lion's pilot.

Hothead finds an unconscious young woman lying on a hill near a wrecked ship. When she awakens at Castle Gradam, she reveals her name is Lisa, and that she is an escaped Earth slave from the Galran Empire. Sincline is drilling beneath the surface of Altea so he can plant a 10-megaton bomb underneath Castle Gradam, and obliterate both the castle and Golion in one swift stroke. Shorty and a local boy discover Sincline's plot and try to stop it.

The Golion team is building a soccer field for the children, and Seidô is using a large construction vehicle that's specially designed for the task.
