With timely commentary about social injustice, Cross has lofty ambitions way above the source material - but everything feels a little half-baked. In the end it loses some of what makes the books so appealing: sinister mind games and elaborate detective work. There's no doubt that Aldis Hodge makes for a Cross with promise, it's too bad the story couldn't match his commanding presence. The main antagonist feels like a DC comic-book villain lifted off the cutting room floor.
