Much better than average variety show tribute has a stellar line-up of Van Dyke’s colleagues (Danza’s soft shoeing is a surprise highlight), and much genuine warmth and appreciation from the guest of honor to give the evening an added nostalgic boost. Doesn’t hurt that Van Dyke’s oeuvre is ideal for this sort of format, and that the performers chosen are more or less able to live up to the memories of their forebears. Definitely an uncritically warm and laudatory tribute, but great fun to watch.
