An interesting curiosity, from a time when the Burtons' personal lives were regular tabloid fodder. Fittingly, the Rome setting is slick and glossy, with pretenses to soulfulness. It's shallow and silly, but there are few nice moments. Taylor is passive, almost somnambulant...rather a shock, since I had just watched "X, Y and Zee". Burton is subdued and almost masochistic, which doesn't suit him at all. Carrie Nye--Mrs. Dick Cavett--is suitably ridiculous as the mutual, um, "meddlesome" friend.
