A partly dramatised account of the life of Sir Edward Elgar classical composer. Huw Wheldon narrates the life story over backdrops of beautiful mountain scenery, especially memorable is the image of young Elgar riding his horse around Malvern Hills (imdb)

Henry Kenneth Alfred "Ken" Russell is an English film director. He is known for his pioneering work in television and film and for his controversial style. He has been criticized as being over-obsessed with sexuality and the church. His subject matter is often about famous composers, or based on other works of art which he adapts loosely. Russell began directing for the BBC, where he did creative adaptations of composers' lives which were unusual for the time... (Wikipedia)

Ken Russell's usual strong visual imagery. Everyone who has seen this seems to remark on the horseback riding sequence, which I find rather ordinary. Much more remarkable, to my mind, is the bitter irony of the juxtaposition of WWI battle footage with Pomp and Circumstance, and the montage of different vocal arrangements of it set to words with images of mindless vulgarity. Huw Wheldon's narration is too often maudlin. Russell had the good sense to end it with Nimrod from the Enigma Variations.
