What a story. Dysfunctional family is an understatement. A lot of powerful messaging in this story. Absolutely amazing acting from Cumberbatch - he should get an award for this performance.

Tries tackling far too many themes/subjects by interconnecting characters and events across New York via flimsy plot contrivances and unbelievable coincidences, from child kidnappings, corrupt cops, crooked politicians, cocaine kingpins, the HIV/AIDS epidemic, racism, homelessness, etc, all neatly tied up, with all the bad guys of every echelon literally caught on video together. This would be far easier to overlook if other aspects of the series were more than average and fairly surface level.

This is not a new one; but a good one. It is a very good job to be able to blend many topics and present them in this way. Corrupt politicians and police force, daddy issues, racism, discrimination, sanity within the freaking society and hope. And yeah, it comes with a very nice analogy. "The reason monsters are scary is because they represent the parts of us we want to turn away from: the monsters under your bed..."
