4 hours was too much for the subject, so it dragged and lost its impact. But a useful history lesson on the struggles of gay communities, not too long ago.

Extraordinarily well done. Without sensationalizing or pandering, it creates a real sense of that particular time and mood in NYC (I was there then, and frequented one of the bars important to the story)--making it all the more disheartening to see that things haven't changed all that much, especially with the NYPD. (Another odd connection: interviewed for the book but not shown in the film because he died a few years ago was another abductee who, it turns out, was a friend of mine. R.I.P. J.G.)
