Henry Kenneth Alfred "Ken" Russell is an English film director. He is known for his pioneering work in television and film and for his controversial style. He has been criticized as being over-obsessed with sexuality and the church. His subject matter is often about famous composers, or based on other works of art which he adapts loosely. Russell began directing for the BBC, where he did creative adaptations of composers' lives which were unusual for the time... (Wikipedia)

Russell creates his window into the world of these 4 now-mostly-forgotten artists with almost no narration or dialogue, and his already-evident genius for using music + images to get across his ideas - here, some very well-chosen pop songs. Then, at the end, for the montage of the artists doing their work, we hear Bach's concerto for 4 harpsichords, an arrangement of a Vivaldi concerto, as if to say the actual work part of the creative process is and will always be the same. Genius.
