Although filmed for Italian television, this is another typical Jancso about power and resistance in a historical setting. Whether it has any real contemporary import is highly debatable, and so is Jancso/Gagliardo's purpose behind this idiosyncratic interpretation of the final days of Caesar. He somewhat effectively depicts a world in flux rife with suspicion and uncertainty in the absence of central authority, but there is an air of familiarity and cheapness about it that's hard to ignore.
