Born in Maine, John Ford followed his brother Francis to Hollywood in 1914 and directed his first film, The Tornado, in 1917. Ford learned the art of filmmaking in the silent era, often combining well-paced stories with poetic and mythic imagery. He made a seamless transition to sound, eventually winning the Best Director Oscar four times. He might be best known for his many films starring John Wayne, and 1956's The Searchers remains widely regarded as a masterpiece in the history of cinema.

Possessing his father's durable good looks, vigor and charm, this tall, strapping, exceedingly handsome second son of John Wayne had huge boots to fill in trying to escape his legendary father's shadow and corral Hollywood fame on his own terms. But attempt he did and, looking back, he may not have achieved the outright stardom of his father but certainly did quite admirably, making over 40 films in his career -- nine of them with his dad.

Typically Fordian themes (negative on the press a la Fort Apache, Liberty Valence, etc.), and as far as cast and writer, a lead in to The Searchers. Along those lines, Wayne playing a conflicted protagonist is the most similar, though nowhere near as well accomplished here as in The Searchers. For a half hour film, Ford keeps things snappy and moving, while also drawing out a bit of real feeling or conflict in Wayne's newspaperman and Ward Bond's coal miner.
