Arthur C. Clarke presents this unusual documentary on the mathematical discovery of the Mandelbrot Set (M-Set) in the visually spectacular world of fractal geometry. This show relates the science of the M-Set to nature in a way that seems to identify the hand of God in the design of the universe itself. Dr. Mandelbrot in 1980 discovered the infinitely complex geometrical shape called the Mandelbrot Set using a very simple equation with computers and graphics. (imdb)

A fascinating introduction to fractal geometry, presented by Arthur C. Clarke and featuring Mandelbrot himself and other prominent figures in the field (even a few words from Hawking). The scientists tend to get overenthusiastic about the discovery and unwittingly almost mystify it, which I think is irresponsible. However, it is great to see proof that infinite information can unravel from short formulae, and straightforward explanations as to the practical applications of fractal modeling.

Quite an unusual and obscure documentary about a fascinating subject. I suppose in some ways it could have been better explained, but it's from 1995 so it'd be unfair to compare that to modern animation. I liked the style and the speakers. I do feel like they are overselling the whole thing, but at the same time the enthusiasm is also one of the things that makes this documentary enjoyable. Recommended if you're into the subject matter.
