In this study of obedience and authority, documentarian Thomas Bornot pushes reality TV to the bone-chilling limit: He stages a game show in which contestants submit to electric shocks of increasing intensity for a chance to win a million euros. Viewers look on and a hostess presides as participants quiz the contestant and administer punishment for incorrect answers, resulting in a disturbing display of compliance and, in some cases, resistance. So 80% of the participants in the experiment complied with dishing out the punishment, even though it went against their moral code, they obeyed anyways. They were unable to break free from the power of a single authority figure. Congrats France, you've justified the entire Nazi regime!

While this documentary is highly unethical by scientific standards, subjecting people to a 21st century version of the Milgram Experiment on television, it is extremely fascinating to watch. Some of its conclusions are a bit far reaching in regards to television's effect on societal obedience, but its conclusions in regards to the effect authority figures and peers have on people are solid and reconfirm Milgram's work.
