Well done treatment of a complicated figure, the film manages to highlight the tensions implicit in being not just a Jewish convert to Christianity, but being in a position of authority and responsibility in the church. The film seeks to show the complications of the Cardinal's personal narrative, and does just that while avoiding lengthy sermonizing. It is simple in its visual construction, but its pulled back nature allows certain moments of emotional import to really sneak up on you.
