Following the close of World War II, General George S. Patton is seriously injured in a car accident and not expected to survive. "The Last Days of Patton" tells the story of these last few months of the General's life and the Army Medical Corps efforts to save him. Intermixed with flashbacks, the film also shows Patton's earlier career as a fledging tank commander during the First World War. (imdb)

Delbert Mann's sequel to Schaffner's "Patton" amazed me, because it's so obscure (I ran into it on Amazon by chance), because sequels are rarely good, because I thought "Patton" was an impossible act to follow, and especially because it chronicles the unglamorous and bleak decline of an unhinged and demented old has-been. It actually follows Schaffner's cue in paying the utmost respect to its topic, drawing fascinating drama from real-life details, and G.C. Scott is more magnificent than ever.
