Was an American novelist, writer, playwright, poet, essayist, and civil rights activist. Most of Baldwin's work deals with racial and sexual issues in the mid-20th century United States. Novels are notable for the personal way they explored questions of identity as well as for the way they mined complex social and psychological pressures related to being black and homosexual well before the social, cultural or political equality of these groups could be assumed. Died Dec' 01, 1987.

"Symbols are important," states Mario Cuomo in reference to the Statue of Liberty. But as Peirce - a Founding Father of pragmatist semiotics as a uniquely American philosophy - makes clear it is iconicity and indexicality as well as symbolicity that constitute the power of signs. Burns summons, with discipline and purpose (nothing feels rushed even at just 60 minutes), all manner of visual and auditory forms to show that this is the case with Lady Liberty as a sign of the American Republic

Quick, but extremely effective and moving look at the troubled creation and beautiful sentiment of the statue, the nation, and the world at large.
