John Cleese brings a wonderful performance as a man carrying his grief and anger just below the surface, and quite possibly on the edge of a nervous breakdown. The lesson he teaches to poor Katherine, that when life betrays us we win by laughing at its absurdity rather than ranting over its injustice, is profound and elevates a play with some... well... very *difficult* content. Sarah Badel's transformation is astonishing - I sat with my mouth agape during her final speech!
