Franchise executives divined a dark equation and realized better writing as opposed to CGI/VFX wasn't likely to earn more long term profit. It's less risky to churn out middling spinoffs at steady margins, coasting on nostalgia from prior talent. A diminished viewer base remains, and older characters' spinoffs draw nostalgic hopefuls back. Years of uneven or awful work can even make mediocre shows like this seem far better. Actually, I think this is just the standard model for most of Hollywood.

Surprisingly not terrible.
