Proof that Macy can take the most hokey of material and still make it work (as a mute no less); this is the sort of thing usually attempted by an actor more passed his sell-by date, but story of the bond which develops between the older man and a young girl (a somewhat irritatingly precocious Palmer) is smooth and enjoyable, but hoplessly cute and cliched. Begins well, with amusing interjections from Rickles, but soon becomes bogged down in sentimentality (especially in the scenes with Beatty).
