an enjoyable period piece. definitely made me want to read the novels. i especially enjoyed edmund's subtle characterization as he was shaped by his experiences on the ship - he always retained a sense of who he was, but in the subtlest, most immeasurable manner had transformed by the end of the film. my biggest qualm with the film was its ending and the rather cliched romantic reunion, especially since the romantic interest was established as a bit vapid and shallow earlier on.

Somewhat over dramatic plotwise, but Benedict's performance was very convincing (to a point that you actually want to smack the upside of his character's head for being a twat). Jared Harris and JJ Feild and others created the tension that at times you can't help but hold your breath hoping for a good outcome.
