Part of Arte’s series Tous les garçons et les filles de leur âge, Claire Denis sets this 60s coming-of-age tale near a U.S. army base. Pop music, Cold War tensions, teenage desire, it’s all here. A very young French girl sleeps with an American, her brother with her Russian friend. Idealism crashes into experience. Gritty party scenes and unresolved politics linger. It’s about hormones, rebellion and the slow discovery of what you actually believe.

I could watch a 3 hour long movie about Captain Brown just driving around and interacting with hitchhikers or anyone.

Há exatos 25 anos estreava US Go Home na televisão francesa. Não me entendam mal, amo Claire Denis, mas as comparações com o indefectível episódio dirigido pela Chantal Akerman são inevitáveis, apesar desse ser um grande episódio sólido, também não chega a ser uma obra-prima como é o da belga. Feels, not at all surprisingly, like the missing link between Assayas' Cold Water and Denis' own Nenette et Boni (in which Colin and Houri also play siblings, and which in many ways feels like a direct expansion of this film). Stylistically, Denis hasn't fully found her mature, increasingly elliptical and visually poetic sensibility quite yet, and this feels closer to Chocolat with it's functional, muted minimalism than much of the work that came later. Still obviously great filmmaking though.

Well-acted, interesting characters, wistful story that takes place in the sixties without adhering to the cliches that often come with setting a film during that time period. Goes without saying that the music is amazing. Nice cinematography, too. More people need to see this one.
