Balibar Plays Barbara.

Barbara's singing style was melodramatic, one of holding back tears. She did cabaret, hid in heavy make-up, indulged in being a diva. I guess this freewheeling assortment of self-reflexive scenes captures her spirit, which is also, unlike the ladies Amalric accompanied in Tournée, mostly entitled and tiresome. There is a flow and vibrancy to the images though, and Francophiles will feel engulfed in gentle heartbreak, doused in mood and colors, and exit the film with hardly a memory to speak of.
