Disgraced Monuments

In a moving documentary, Disgraced Monuments (1994), which manages to evoke nostalgia without sentimentality, directors Laura Mulvey and Mark Lewis explore the fate of public monuments under successive regimes in the former Soviet Union, and the apparently endless cycle of monumental sculptural programs celebrating the favored leader of the moment, followed inevitably by their iconoclastic dismantling and removal.
