Sessue Hayakawa really was something else. A Asian movie star in narrow minded Hollywood. His presence is unique and therefore it's with great interest one watches his movies. Here escaping a boat at dock to venture illegally into the US. So this becomes a story about what makes an true American. Hayakawa really makes an impressive performance out of a rather plain crime plot. No wonder he was one of the extremely rare non-whites making a career in American movies!
