Failed to thrill or amuse me, and kinda backwards in its morality. Also, the friar is really annoying. That said, it isn't a strictly bad movie. It is taut and coherent, it's just not very effective aside from that.

A dark comedy that would have benefitted from being a little more subtle. Starts off setting the mood perfectly with snow and a Yves Montand song before a corpse needs to be buried, but it goes a little freestyle when Fernandel gets to panic without proper directorial guidance. A little more finesse around that would have come a long way in making this brilliant. Regardless of not hitting its peak, L'auberge rouge [The Red Inn] (1951) still provides a wild time that was a joy to behold!
