Oedipus the King

Many aspects of this adaptation of 'Oedipus Rex' to the screen fail to take full advantage of the affordances of film as an expressive medium; in many ways it's simply a filming of the play. But the layering of sound and image, in particular the punctuating of extended moments of the main protagonists 'performing' in front of the chorus with flashbacks of highly dynamic moments of action, creates an impactful cacophony for the eyes and ears. The use of freeze frames is very effective.
