A kind of proto-Kusturica, all about the hot tempers, the fiery passions, and the song and dance and rich humor of gypsy life. It's an excellent film with some wonderful moments, although I thought Bora could have been a stronger character. I didn't really get into him the way I've been mesmerized by Kusturica's characters.

Not a stretch to speculate this might be the main source of Kusturica's inspiration. There are no happy Gypsies here, but they are festive for dwellers of a dilapidated, sinister world. The richness in music and song contrasted with crime, poverty, abuse of women, often savage rural life cluttered with animals, it's all here. It doesn't have Kusturica's sweeping story arc, or the focus on character dynamics most films do, but rather works as a low-key, atmospheric and open-ended drama.
