In August 1991 a failed coup d'état attempt (known as Putsch) led by a group of hard-core communists in Moscow, ended the 70-year-long rule of the Soviets. The USSR collapsed soon after, and the tricolour of the sovereign Russian Federation flew over Kremlin. A quarter of a century later, Sergei Loznitsa revisits the dramatic moments of August 1991 and casts an eye on the event which was hailed worldwide as the birth of "Russian democracy". (imdb)

Great documentary that shows not facts, but the overall atmosphere and mood of the event. Very raw and immersive.

Loznitsa's style doesn't work for me. It would be more immersive to watch his film(s) in a theatre. Loznitsa is a Ukrainian. This fact makes it more interesting to watch his films on the Soviet past, especially today. Anyone interested in the 89-91 events in the Soviets should read Zubok's book "Collapse: The Fall of the Soviet Union" and might want to revisit this as a visual companion to the book.
