This is a tiny perfect movie. A compassionate, clear-eyed but lyrical look at the life of a poor labouring family in Canada's Ottawa Valley in the 1940s/1950s, and about the daughter (Margot Kidder - her first film) who escapes it. B&W, limited dialogue, 1 hour long - but full of texture, and a fantastic score, by Hector Berlioz of all people. This is how you make well off people understand and think about the poor. A keeper.
