I don't know if anyone has ever put so many sympathetic serial killers into art movies as Tavernier has. The tone of this film twists and turns more than its plot does, and it's a character study - unlike most crime films, the protagonists here are more mysterious and intriguing than any unexposed event. Galabru and Noiret's performances combine loud rage with sly mind-games and a dab of comedy, and every time they're one-on-one the film soars.
