Films you really really want to see!

Post by paulofilmo »

I know we've had the films that you're embarrassed about not seeing, but I don't really care about those. These are for the films you've read about or have been told about that you just have to see. -- I put them in the 'Some of the films you've decided to remember for another day' section

I'll add a little explanation to a few, but I'm not expecting anyone else to.

Blame It on Fidel (2006) - I like films about childhood. So a film from a child's perspective, with socialism and French sophistication:- winner

Cría cuervos (1976) - 'powerful psychological drama in which family crises which reflect the embattled soul of a nation are seen through the eyes of an unusually perceptive child...'

Fanny and Alexander (1982) - Childhood + Bergman

Forbidden Games (1952) - http://heim.etherweave.com/weblog/archives/2005_09.html

The Four Hundred Blows (1959)

Into the Wild (2007) - A premise I find fascinating+Eddie Vedder soundtrack+the seriousness of Sean Penn = win.

The Lion in Winter (1968) - Period drama, UK, high PSI, Anthony Hopkins = win.

The Secret Life of Words (2005) - 'Summary: Isabel Coixet's intensely perceptive, cathartic love story is about the need for human interdependence and the power of silence and speech to transcend trauma. (Strand Releasing)', Sarah Polley.

Small Change (1976) - roujin - 'It might be the quintessential movie on childhood.'

The Sweet Hereafter (1997) - Sarah Polley, drama, 'rural community', high PSI, all my kumpels adore it.

There Will Be Blood (2007) - PTA. That should be an "enuff sed" moment, but adding Daniel Day-Lewis into the mix, as well as knowing the Arvo Part piece, "Fratres" is in the soundtrack results in my estimation of perfection.

Time of the Gypsies (1988) - I read the user reviews.

Turtles Can Fly (2004) - The childhood perspective in a setting of harsh adversity.

The War Zone (1999) - I do have a thing about depressing films and injustice. I like to be riled up and impassioned. Adding the fact that this is a UK independent with a high PSI; I'm very eager to see it.

Who's Afraid of Virgi... (1966) - It doesn't have an awesome high PSI, but my kumpels love it. I am a little apprehensive about it being script obsessed considering the director and writer.

Dangerous Dance - An israeli film I was told was the worst ever made. Out of curiosity, of course, I downloaded it - only to discover it was the INTERNATIONAL version, which is basically the same film filmed again in english. I saw five minutes of it, and was too afraid to carry on. Someday I'll see it. I'm considering keeping live track of all this film's retardation to be able to show out and warn the world later.

Other than that, I have about a 1,000 films in my 'Remembered Films' list. I can't really say which I am waiting forward the most.

The Human Condition - Epic nine hour trilogy about a pacifist traversing World War II, by one of my favorite directors, Masaki Kobayashi. Recently got a new transfer from Janus Films, so a DVD release shouldn't be far away.

Notorious - Hitchcock.

An Actor's Revenge - Only seen two films by Kon Ichikawa, and loved both. Everyone seems to like this a lot.

I need to see quite a few of the Hitchcock classics, such as Psycho an Rear Window. I've seen enough to know they are both excellent, but have never sat and watched them from start to finish.

I'm 69% done with the "They Shoot Pictures, Don't They?" top 1000 list. Here's the higher-ranking ones I haven't seen yet:

#159: The Crowd
#203: Tabu
#238: The Shop Around the Corner
#243: The Tree of Wooden Clogs*
#245: Only Angels Have Wings
#249: Ninotchka
#256: Lola Montes
#276: Senso
#281: Johnny Guitar
#297: Wavelength

* I've tried watching this twice, and even though I loved the other Olmi films I've seen, this one bores me to tears

Exterminating Angel's been at the top of my list for ages, and I think I first became aware of it through this site. I've been waiting on some fancy DVD release, though there's always been that region 2 disc to tempt me.
