In his new position, Boeckel invents a laundry detergent with unfortunately disastrous consequences: the laundry becomes brittle, and the first major marital spat ensues. Eduard flees to his fellow musicians, gets drunk, and seeks solace with Alwine.

Curiously it's very hard to see what the film is exactly aiming for. Disaster strikes and the lax prof proves to be too far removed of the real problems of the world, on the other hand his enemies are shown in the most unsympathetic, satirical way denouncing the militaristic, bourgeois ideology of the Kaiserreich.

This Brechtian musical about a young woman who flees from her decrepit, noble fiancé and marries a sailor is an interesting, although not a completely successful attempt to translate the sort of stage show to film. It has some good points, including the complete abandonment of the sort of surrealistic stage design that had enlivened the silent cinema. Instead, this tries for a purely cinematic technique, including multiple exposures, undercranking and distorting camera angles and lenses. (imdb)

A lively, sophisticated little comedy with music in the style of Rene Clair, featuring a boisterous performance by Peter Lorre as a wiseacre newspaper editor who turns a backwards little town in Germany into a champagne-soaked jazz metropolis via creative misinformation. (imdb)

Mr. and Mrs. Linsemann have been happily married for a year. In their chic home, a modern villa financed by a loan and not yet fully paid off, the lady of the house intends to throw a big one-year anniversary party to please her husband. Then a journalist she loves gets in touch and takes on the crime.

The plot revolves around a femme fatale called Genuine who had actually been the high priestess of some cult. Due to a clash between factions, she ends up in a slave market and is eventually bought by an eccentric old man who keeps the girl in the cellar of his 'notorious' mansion so as to shelter her from the vices of modern life. The irony is that the girl's own nature is infinitely more dangerous to the young men she enslaves. (imdb)
