Cooper is a Union Army officer who after being jilted by girlfriend, Virginia Bruce, volunteers on what could be a suicide mission. He's to ride to a certain plantation which is a local brigade headquarters and deliberately let himself by caught with maps showing false Union troop dispositions. City gambler Larry Sheldon, upon hearing that a pal has been taken for a ride, goes to the hideout of Spot Willis and, to all appearances, wreaks revenge. Without explanation, William "Still" Waters, the head of a London business, asks stenographer Monica Trant to be his "official fiancée" for 500 pounds. Monica agrees in order to help support her brother. Monica is introduced to Waters' family at his home. She charms his mother and other relatives, and even wins over the reserved Waters, but she soon resents the business nature of their proposition and returns to London. Waters then explains the reason for the strange request.
Maida Carrington (Fannie Ward) goes to a city with a gambler (Charles West) but runs away after she witnesses the gambler steal money from Steve Boyce (Jack Dean). The woman takes a job with the Salvation Army and after that she meets Steve again because he now has no money and needs help. They fall in love and Steve asks her to marry him, but Maida thinks she isn't a good match for him because of her past association with the gambler.
A woman named Betty (Fannie Ward) is simple and plain, her husband finds that boring and doesn't invite her out. She decides she needs to wear nicer clothes to get the attention of her husband. Suddenly she inherits a large amount of money while at the same time her husband loses all his money in a stock market crash. Her husband doesn't realize she is rich so he goes out to California to sell some of their property to raise some final money.
Because he believes that romance is dead, the city editor (Jack Matheis wants to can the "advice to the lovelorn" column. Rosalie Beckwith, the column's author (Minter), naturally disagrees with him. The editor suggests that she prove him wrong by seeing if she can find romance within a 40-mile radius of the city. So Rosalie takes a train to Essex, Connecticut and is mistaken for the cousin of wealthy ex-soldier Bob Straton (Alen Forrest).
Kitty Bellairs is a flirtatious young girl on a holiday trip to Bath, in 18 Century England. Her sister becomes involved in a scandal, from which Kitty rescues her from, all the while leaving a string of conquests behind her.
Lady Jocelyn, a favorite in the court of England's King James, escapes a forced marriage to the hated Lord Carnal by fleeing to American colonies. There she meets and marries Captain Ralph Percy. Pursued by Lord Carnal, Lady Jocelyn and her new husband eventually find themselves shipwrecked on a desert island with Lord Carnal. A band of pirates finds them there, and Captain Percy convinces them that he is himself a notorious pirate chief.
Texas Ranger Bill Storm is sent to El Paso to ferret out a gang of counterfeiters thought to be working there and, on the way, gives a ride to New York socialite Beverly Dix, whose car has been wrecked on the road to El Paso. Bill quickly comes to suspect Earl Hanway and Lefty Waterman of passing bad bills; taking Beverly’s father into his confidence, Bill identifies the counterfeiting plant, arrests Hanway and Waterman, and finds himself with his arms full of Beverly.
