Machiko and Haruki’s drama continues. Machiko is not allowed to see Haruki. They finally meet again, but Haruki departs to Europe.

During an air raid on Tokyo, a young couple meet and fall instantly in love. They part, promising to meet again on the bridge but unfortunately neglect to tell each other their names. After the war, and after much waiting and dreaming, the young girl-Machiko by name-marries. The marriage does not work out, however, and she decides to get a divorce, only to discover that she is pregnant. (KG)

During World War II, a dedicated field surgeon accidentally contracts syphilis when he cuts his hand while operating on an infected soldier. Bound by medical ethics and personal honor, he conceals his diagnosis from his devoted fiancée and quietly submits himself to secret treatments, choosing to break her heart rather than burden her with his condition.

The sweet but naive denizens of a charming port town are hoodwinked by a couple of con men who prey on them at the outset of the war. But the hustlers' plan backfires when they come down with severe cases of conscience. Kinoshita's directorial debut is a breezy, warmhearted, and often very funny crowd-pleaser that's a testament to the filmmaker's faith in people. (imdb)
