When a well-known New York businessman is found dead in the penguin pool of a local zoo aquarium, Inspector Oscar Piper is called in to investigate the murder. At first, Inspector Piper is put off by one of the eyewitnesses, a schoolteacher named Hildegarde Withers, who seems overly inquisitive and meddlesome. But as the investigation progresses, Inspector Piper forms an uneasy alliance with the shrewd Miss Withers, whose insights and advice help to crack the case.

An ex-cop who is now a private detective is hired by a woman to be the go-between in retrieving an important envelope from her partner. The detective has the partner come to his apartment to give him the envelope, but someone sneaks into his apartment and strangles her while the detective is in another room. Fearful that the police will suspect him of the murder, he brings the woman's body back to her own apartment, but the police find out and suspect him of the murder anyway. (imdb)

They are still on Page 1 when an intoxicated man wanders into their room, collapses and they, looking for identification, find $15,000 in his pockets. On the assumption that me might be a blackmailer, the three decide to build a scenario around him. Thinks become a bit more involved when the man is later found to be murdered.
