Milly

This story opens in 1938 in Rome, where Marcello has just taken a job working for Mussollini and is courting a beautiful young woman who will make him even more of a conformist. Marcello is going to Paris on his honeymoon and his bosses have an assignment for him there: to look up an old professor who fled Italy when the fascists came into power.

This film consists of four parts: Part 1, "The Last Christmas Dinner," is about the relationship between an old man and an old woman, both homeless. Part 2, "The Electric Floor Polisher," is an opera-like story of a woman who is obsessed with polishing her floors. Part 3 is a musical interlude featuring Jeanne Moreau singing "When Love Dies." Part 4, "The Virtue of Tolerance," concerns an old man, his young wife, and how they come to terms when she has an affair with a man her own age. (imdb)
