In 1959, a time capsule is buried at an elementary school. One pupil's contribution is a strange letter containing a long sequence of numbers. Fifty years later the capsule is opened, and the contents distributed. The father of the boy who receives the strange letter is a university professor, who begins to discern a bizarre significance to the numeric string, leading him deeper and deeper into questions about the nature of the universe and the future of terrestrial life.
