Hitch-hiking conmen Bad News Johnson and July Jones arrive in a Midwestern small town with a capital of 25 cents. After six years of marriage to Alexander W. Brett (Montague Love), his wife Felicia (Roland) can stand no more of her husband's brutal bullying. She heads to Reno, establishes the standard six-week residence, and files for divorce. Nasty old Brett intends to get even by retaining custody of Felicia's beloved son Bobby (Douglas Scott), and the case drags on and on interminably.
In a small town in the South, Jim Preston resents his stepfather, Judge Calhoun Davis, in spite of everything the judge has done to be a father him. "Cal" is the most respected man in town, and makes his judgements in court with authority and generosity. He married Jim's mother Martha after her first husband died, having loved her since their childhood. Both Cal and Martha are mystified as to how to transform Jim from a rebellious and lazy youth to a responsible, hard-working adult.
The film is set in Memphis, Tennessee and focuses on a street sweeper who comes upon a large parcel of money. He uses the newly acquired wealth to go on a spending spree, with the hope of getting back at an old girlfriend who dumped him for another man. However, complications arise when it is discovered the money is counterfeit.
