Actually, the sailor wants nothing to do with the boy, who we eventually find out is an orphan who ran away from the orphanage, trying to find a new Mom and Dad. The sailor, not knowing anything about the boy, thinks he'll be more successful hitchhiking alone back to his ship. He is perhaps most well known for developing over 140 products from all parts of the peanut plant, including the shells and husks. He also developed products based on sweet potatoes and soybeans, and developed a cotton hybrid that was named after him.

It's 1850 and California has just become part of the United States. But there is trouble between the Americans and the Mexicans and John Carrol has been sent to try and bring law and order. The Americans have become the unauthorized law and are kicking the Mexicans off their ranchos. When the Mexican leader is killed saving Carroll's life, Carroll takes over as their new leader.
