Transporting. There is a structural whimsey which is beautiful, overlaid upon two central performances which are astoundingly good. Binoche steals the show in a career-topping performance, but Shimell is no cipher; his anger-within-intimacy most compelling.

Nice if you like submarine films. Terrible cast and perfunctory script. I know it was 1989, but the alien stuff at the end was just awful.

A romantic portrayal of conscience emerging within a law firm defending the indefensible. A large burden is carried by Clooney's inherent likeability, but the plotlines become very silly. Tilda Swindon's exaggerated anxiety, and the absurd car-bomb sequence, spoil what might have been an adequate but conventional thriller.

A caper film with three characteristics: alternate/divergent histories in four chapters, but with excessive care taken not to make any demands on the viewer; a cute animation overlay for no good reason; the introduction of Franka Potente to Anglo-American audiences. Too much time is spent keeping the audience comfortable with the structural 'innovation' to leave room for anything else of much interest.

A pretty but rather tedious adaptation, fatally undermined by poor casting of its principals. Saved somewhat by an early iteration of Maggie Smith playing the single delightful charicature she was to make her own, and Rupert Graves' fringe.
