"If you liked All the President's Men, you will like this. Well done."
64 42% 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) - Rated 12 Mar 2017
"Strong opening; interesting idea, but there were a few significant missteps that took me out of the film, especially at the end. Winstead reminded me of a young Natalie Woods."
59 28% Logan (2017) - Rated 12 Mar 2017
"Moves X-Men out of the super hero genre into a drama, R-rated action movie. The transfer didn't really work for me, probably due to the script. Also: if dance numbers in musicals were shot like action sequences in this, no one would like dance sequences."
64 42% Luke Cage (2016) - Rated 30 Dec 2016
"Blaxploitation w/timely, more thoughtful attempts at social issues replacing more exploitative elements; or maybe a superhero version of Fat Albert. Actors have the right look, but I was a bit disappointed by acting. Also, wished filmmaking was more interesting, although I understand this is a TV show."
71 72% La La Land (2016) - Rated 30 Dec 2016
"Where Mullholland Drive is the nightmare version of an aspiring Hollywood actress, this film is the dream version (albeit tempered). Music, dancing, singing largely unexceptional, reminding me of film adaptation of Chicago. Stone's acting and the terrific montage sequence save the movie for me. Chazelle's 1st film, a mumblecore musical, is more interesting and inspiring."
68 58% Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) - Rated 30 Dec 2016
"A somewhat entertaining addendum to episode IV, despite almost zero attempt to create characters (Luna seemed like a poor casting choice as well.) K2, the droid, might have been the most engaging character. Action sequences surprisingly dull. Ties to Ep IV are probably best parts for me."
82 94% White Christmas (2014) - Rated 29 Dec 2016
"One of the best episodes. Well-executed tech concept used in a more conventionally entertaining context--vs. the more realistic, thought-provoking/disturbing nature of most of the other episodes."
71 72% The Lobster (2015) - Rated 29 Dec 2016
"The film seems made from the perspective of god chuckling at the folly and ineptitude of humans dealing with marriage and singleness, both on societal and individual levels. Different and interesting, if not exceptional."
68 58% Sing Street (2016) - Rated 28 Dec 2016
"Fun to see Carney et al. construct new 80's pop tunes as if they were aspiring teenage musicians in the 80s. With that context, the songs and performances are quite good, and fun. The story and characters--weakest among Carney's three films--is just OK."
47 9% Moana (2016) - Rated 19 Dec 2016
"I hate to say it but the film was forgettable in many ways--the music, the characters, the story. Having said that it wasn't a terrible movie."
