Seriously loses it when Kirk & Bones get sent away and a lame mystery game of ‘find the shoe’ takes up a ridiculous amount of time until Spock mind assaults a woman. Contains many otherwise fine aspects.

There’s a quality episode of Lois & Clark happening in between this Silver Age Supes pastiche. It just doesn’t go far enough with the goofy to really sell the era as more than a wink and a nod to the faithful. And the layers of irony can make the optimism difficult to discern as sincere. A miss for me, unfortunately.

Fever dream filmmaking. Interesting as the last film from Toshio Matsumoto (known for Funeral Parade of Roses), who only made four feature films in his lifetime before dying in 2017.

Why this isn’t talked about along with the works of Cassavetes and other early American independent cinema is something I will never understand. Poor distribution may have been a factor at one point but I don’t know how this could still be forgotten. The racial themes, the actors, the time and place portrayed and captured on film - this is among a small list of films that I categorize as a work of cultural significance and deserving of a place in film history.

The kind of anime that cuddles up next to you and makes you feel warm all over - a cup of cocoa would have been nice, but I can't ask much more from a movie. Completely engrossing.
