80 75% 3 Days of the Condor (1975) - Rated 07 Apr 2024
"With a quite silly and improbable, yet irresistible Robert Redford leading, this 70s spy thriller breathes life into an era marked by conspiracies and political skepticism. It melds nostalgic charm with timeless suspense, crafting a narrative that engages without to much of the modern twists. Its authentic aesthetic and soundtrack is a hallmark of a bygone era, embodying its distinctive character in an iconic way."
78 65% Le règne animal (2023) - Rated 05 Apr 2024
"A thought-provoking, stylish, and cozy film, brimming with wonderful magical realism. Regardless of the era we live in, life continues to unfold for us all, filled with its beauty and challenges, and with the constant presence of living in a society among terrified fellow humans who never seem to learn."
89 91% Amour (2012) - Rated 31 Mar 2024
"It's almost perverse to watch such a naked portrayal of couple relationships, parenthood, and the supremely depicted personifications of the vows of for better or worse, in sickness and in health, and till death do us part, but paradoxically it's also as normal as life is when considered honestly and inwardly."
79 68% Wonka (2023) - Rated 30 Mar 2024
"It enchants with a warm charm, mirroring Roald Dahl’s magical and soulful world, backed by solid theatrical acting. While visually captivating, the film falters with excessive CGI, overshadowing its otherwise robust production. The first half shines, weaving dreams and creativity, but the latter part slows down with a somewhat lacklustre finale. A standalone, worthy interpretation of Wonka’s realm. Ideal for families of dreamers."
75 44% Garden of Words (2013) - Rated 23 Mar 2024
"The beautiful animation is what carries the film and also basically the only thing that stays with you afterwards. I would have liked it alot better if it was just the moving pictures with ambience and music."
83 83% Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010) - Rated 23 Mar 2024
"This film offers a meditative experience with its slow pace and mostly static camera, creating space for reflection. Its minimalist cinematography highlights the natural beauty of nature in general and specifically Thailand and complements the story’s magical realism. Themes of death and rebirth are explored originally, and the actors’ passive performances give way to the film’s own expression. A thought-provoking exploration of life’s complexity and mystique."
90 94% Dune: Part Two (2024) - Rated 23 Mar 2024
"Truly epic — well played by everyone in the production and over all beautifully executed. A master piece in its genre."
77 60% Outer Space (2000) - Rated 17 Mar 2024
"Its ghostly, chaotic visuals are initially aesthetically striking, yet the hysterical elements quickly became overwhelming, and even though it’s short I lost interest at times. The noise-like soundtrack adds a bit of charm. Even if the film annoyed me it was still appealing at some level. Worth watching if you like experimental cinema and horror, on the plus side is that it managed to offer a quite unique cinematic experience."
85 86% Yuki no taiyou (1972) - Rated 17 Mar 2024
"“Yuki’s sun” impresses with its minimalist storytelling, delivering a complete narrative in five minutes. Though brief, it effectively conveys Yuki's journey towards security, proving a story's depth isn't tied to its length. This short film is a testament to the power of simplicity in storytelling, showcasing how much can be achieved with minimal resources. A good watch for admirers of concise, economic and impactful cinema. It would have been even better if it was more aesthetically appealing."
83 83% Poor Things (2023) - Rated 16 Mar 2024
"Like Lanthimos other films this one will occupy my mind for a while. Stone shines in a magnetic performance, supported by Dafoe and Youseff. Though Ruffalo is a bit uneven, the film’s dreamlike cinematography, along with a striking set design, captivates. The plot, delving into human nature, sometimes meanders, particularly in the Paris scenes. Yet, its artistic depth and Stone’s compelling portrayal make it a recommended watch if you seek a blend of aesthetic beauty and thoughtful storytelling."
