Generally I rate films/shows/shorts as if I was grading a paper. Nothing's ever gotten 100, and most settle in the B- to C+ range, which I generally consider decent.

I've rated a handful of 0's, though.

75 44% Turning Red (2022) - Dec 04, 2022
"I know a lot of people loved this- and I wonder if they just love it despite its flaws, for the message. The animation style is that oversimplified one that's happened of late, and it's oversaturated things. The other three girls are two-dimensional and bothersome in how they're constructed. Mei and the mother's relationship is interesting, but the mother did turn me off for her unwillingness to see that her daughter could choose to do things she'd not approve of. I did not relate to it enough."
78 56% A Christmas Story Christmas (2022) - Dec 04, 2022
"It had some big shoes to fill, so it wasn't going to be as good as the original. But it was entertaining, great to see most of the cast back, and had a few good moments."
75 44% Strange World (2022) - Nov 30, 2022
"This movie is neither great, nor awful. Themes from movies like Osmosis Jones, Ferngully, Journey to the Center of the Earth, wraps it up in some multigenerational family drama. It has some creative ideas but they're not executed well. The characters have strengths- doesn't make them super appealing (Meridian, the mom, was most solid and she's kinda static). The dog serves no purpose but to be a liability. Just okay. Not a strong showing. But 'woke' don't ruin it, other things sap its strength."
77 51% Disenchanted (2022) - Nov 20, 2022
"Much less fun and whimsical than the first one. Animation and effects are pretty good. Some of the ways in which it handles magic and its effects just feel- clunky and uneven I guess. They do milk Idina Menzel's voice for less stellar song pieces, she does a great job."
76 47% Midsommar (2019) - Oct 30, 2022
91 96% The School for Good and Evil (2022) - Oct 30, 2022
79 60% Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons (2022) - Oct 26, 2022
"A lot to like in this, but it opens with the same Superman scene we always have, and we didn't need it- and in the fight at the end, when they have a clever way to deal with the problem, they have the problem live for a little close combat and that just kinda wrecks the momentum for me- not needed. Just decent. Coulda been written better than it was."
18 3% Jeepers Creepers: Reborn (2022) - Oct 20, 2022
"(spoilers) Seen people rip the effects and costumes apart, and yes, they're awful and distracting in the wrong way. Not many mention the lighting issues as there's so much light that constantly pours in and wrecks the believability/scare factor. But the writing/script flow is easily the biggest problem along with the sets. "We can't get out!" Kick the pallet out of the window. Shoot it with the gun, you've got a gun! Plan to defeat the creeper, let's split up and stab him from the roof? Awful."
46 13% Halloween Ends (2022) - Oct 15, 2022
"It's like the events of the first 90 minutes- garbage as they are (and my word, is every townsperson a jerk for no reason?)- completely undoes any desire to see the end confrontation that you'd expect from the movies to the point where I'm just unconcerned about the outcome at that stage. How can you mess up a movie this badly that's supposed to be about Laurie Strode finally confronting and dealing with Michael Myers?"
78 56% Hocus Pocus 2 (2022) - Sep 30, 2022
"(minor spoilers in review) The introduction of the flashback witch is a big plot hole given she never shows back up to interfere with anything, yet was there to in the flashback. The Sanderson actresses are fantastic- student actresses are solid. But it has a BS element for an ingredient for the big spell featured in this and yet it works- WHAT? The warning and playout of the spell when it is used- it's very unclear on its rules/consequences too. Still entertaining, bad 'rules' for its magic."
