90 58% | The Lodger (1927) - Rated 28 Apr 2024
"Alfred Hitchcock referred to "The Lodger" as the first true "Hitchcock" film. A movie that helped shape the modern-day thriller genre. Hitchcock explores religious imagery and themes of mistaken identity, obsession of blondes and fear of authority. Hitchcock plays the viewer brilliantly with his touches of suspense, surprise, mystery and romance. Considered by some critics as Hitchcock's greatest silent film. "The Lodger" is Hitchcock's first thriller, his first cameo and his first masterpiece."

84 41% | Uncut Gems (2019) - Rated 27 Apr 2024
"Adam Sandler is fantastic as the flawed, raw and unrefined Howard Ratner: an unlikeable, greedy, gambling addict and fast-talking jewish jeweler. "Uncut Gems" is an exhausting, fast paced anxiety fueled odyssey with very original story ideas and clever themes. "Gems" is full of tension with frantic editing and very fast pacing. The Safdie brothers have created something mysterious, mystical and powerful with cosmic visuals. Sandler in one of his most memorable and best performances ever."

92 76% | The Kid Brother (1927) - Rated 24 Apr 2024
"An homage to a film called "Tol'able David" (1921) and a re-make of "The White Sheep" (1924). "The Kid Brother" is a classic silent comedy with a series of clever gags, physical stunts and an absurd monkey. An action packed Western, adventure with elements of horror and noir. Harold Lloyd's combination of slapstick, romance and sentiment is simple, heart felt and hilarious silent comedy. The gags, laughs and thrills never stop. One of Lloyd's best, successful and most popular films."

74 11% | Petite Maman (2021) - Rated 19 Apr 2024
"A magical, modern day fairy tale and French fantasy film. "Petite Maman" is a sad, small-scale family movie with heavy subject matter. Celine Sciamma's directing of scenes and actors is delicate, intimate and very subtle. The two child actors are terrific, but the film suffers from its short run time in developing its characters and its ending. The screenplay raises way too many questions with very little answers. Sciamma embraces the magic of cinema with no need for exposition or explanations."

82 32% | The Mystic (1925) - Rated 18 Apr 2024
"A little known film with now-forgotten names, "The Mystic" is a long-unavailable gem of a movie and an obscure rarity. A sinister, stellar, very underrated performance by Aileen Pringle with costumes and special effects really well done for its time. Tod Browning explores familiar themes of reformation and unpunished crimes that is also related to the director's other sideshow shockers. Browning's morbid cinema of atmospheric chills is a spooky melodrama and thrilling tent show attraction."

84 41% | Drive My Car (2021) - Rated 18 Apr 2024
"Based on the Haruki Murakami's short story, "Drive My Car" is an emotionally complex movie. Melancholy, poetic and profound with powerful acting performances. Winner of the Best International Feature Film Oscar and Best Screenplay award at Cannes. Long, subtle, and slow-paced but very realistic and rewarding. A tragic reflection of real life, grief, regret and acceptance. With a lengthy run time that never feels too long, Ryusuke Hamaguchi has made an honest, haunting and truly heart-felt film."

90 58% | The Freshman (1925) - Rated 17 Apr 2024
"Harold Lloyd's most popular silent film and biggest box office hit of the 1920s. A hugely successful and popular film at the time of release with one of the most funny and famous sports sequences ever filmed. Lloyd is hilarious and heroic, determined to triumph and win the big game! Lloyd is fearless in the "The Freshman", a timeless and classic silent-era sports picture that will make you laugh and make you cheer. A crowd pleasing, college comedy led by Lloyd's slapstick comedic brilliance."

79 26% | The Power of the Dog (2021) - Rated 16 Apr 2024
"A tragic tale of toxic masculinity, sexuality and dominance. A devastating exploration of sexual repression set among the epic landscapes of 1925 Montana. A Western psychodrama that is thin on plot but far from pointless. Jane Campion won an Academy Award for best director, making the film the first to only win in that category since "The Graduate" (1967). "The Power Of The Dog" has great cinematography, a wonderful score, terrific acting and a career best performance by Cumberbatch."

100 94% | The Gold Rush (1925) - Rated 14 Apr 2024
"The film Chaplin wanted to be remembered by, "The Gold Rush" is critically acclaimed and remains the highest grossing silent comedy. Includes Chaplin's most celebrated comedy sequences including the eating of his shoe, the dance of the dinner rolls and the teetering cabin. An epic dramatic comedy motivated by romance rather than greed. Chaplin intelligently combines special effects, comedy and dramatic situations that border on tragedy. One of the finest and most memorable films ever made."

60 2% | Nanny (2022) - Rated 11 Apr 2024
"Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, Nikyatu Jusu's directorial debut is a psychological horror, fantasy film with good acting performances and great cinematography. A story more unsettling than compelling with complicated ideas of dreams, motherhood and immigration. A movie with more water than blood and the score is much scarier than the visuals. "Nanny" has very tame horror elements, is not scary or disturbing and in the end fails to really haunt the viewer."
