"Achingly beautiful, but beneath the painterly frames lies a patriarchal fever dream where women are magical sex witches, mute housekeepers, or hysterical nuisances to be sedated without consent. The solemnity loops into slapstick; I laughed so hard my eyes hurt. Feels like the Emperor’s New Clothes of art cinema; daring you to admit you’re bored, confused, and slightly furious. Not sure Tarkovsky wanted me to cry with laughter. But I did."
