I'm shocked at how much this triggered my narcolepsy, definitely the most of any film in recent memory. It's just so...sterile, which I get was a conscious directorial choice, but it feels DOA. In that vein, I couldn't stand the decision to make all the characters these quasi-autistic, automatons; I much prefer the (imo) more nuanced deadpan humor in Lanthimos' other films.

Can't wait for the inevitable (and unwarranted) Criterion Collection release! Josh Safdie, you will always be my muse ❤️

I guess I'm the only person on earth with my dumbfuck little opinions, so here goes: The ingenious production design is doing a lot of heavy lifting for a script that is only tepidly witty, and undisciplined to the extreme. The movie is at least 30 mins too long, which is easily its greatest sin, since the humor alone is nowhere near enough to sustain it. The dream sequences in particular are quite eyeroll-worthy.

An absolutely horrendous movie that purports to be about so many things, but is entirely hollow, artificial, plastic. It's honestly a pretty bleak sign of the times that even this generation's Oscar-bait is *so* irredeemably without merit, and yet by virtue of ticking off whatever arbitrary, astroturfed criteria du jour, can *still* be heaped with adulation and accolades. First time in memory a movie has literally made me feel nauseous by how ostentatiously BAD it is.

*Obviously* Kathy Bates is virtually flawless here, but man oh man is this movie coooorrrnnnyyy by today's standards. It's so much a product of its time that I almost feel bad trying to objectively rate it. I'm biased bc the book is my favorite King as well
