Bio: New here! I've always loved movies, but the last 5-10yr have changed yet broadened my tastes, and now a trip to the theater is like self care. Watching BTS and documentaries are not just palatable but fascinating. The enchantment of cinema, of real sets, masterful stories, and powerful performance, is the draw for me.
I wanted one place to catalog what I've seen, and am dabbling in reviews. The user-matching system is interesting!

Scooby-Doo (2002) - Rated 31 Oct 2026
Frequently cringeworthy, it tries to be a faithful Scooby-Doo story at times, but often reeks of typical live action adaptation crap. Terrible script, random romantic interests, and only occasionally passable humor. Tonally dissonant between childish antics and frathouse gags. Upside, the actors and energy of the scenes do it justice. Cool sets, but the CG looks awful.

Wildwood (2026) - Rated 29 Oct 2026
A treat for the eyes and the heart in every scene. Wildwood is impressive, and remembering that every frame is hand-posed lends oneself to frequent awe. The story is much better than most kid-focused films, but still borrows several of their tropes. Music is good, acting is powerfully authentic, and the drama gets its due.

It Follows (2015) - Rated 29 Oct 2026
No clue what the good reviews are about, It Follows is boring, uninspired, unscary nonsense. Bad acting, directing, editing, writing, just about everything. Audio/music are decent, and some shots are cool, but I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone. There's already a low bar for serviceable story and fear factor in horror, and they limboed both.

The Cabin in the Woods (2011) - Rated 28 Oct 2026
Totally uninitiated going into this, but as soon as you see the rooftop agent, it's basically an open book test. Wish the background plot was way more subtle and sparse, though it remains a worthwhile twist on the genre. Humor was a pretty even ratio of funny to annoying. A love letter to horror that doesn't really have a point to make and falls pretty flat at the end, but showcases some gruesome scenes in the meantime.

The Blair Witch Project (1999) - Rated 26 Oct 2026
First view, theatrical. Better than expected. For me, most tension came from social conflict, not the mediocre supernatural spooks. Outdated, ill-fitting tropes like innocuous nature noises and giggling children. Some unsettling scenes, but always stops short of a real scare. Convincing acting, but it's like the men shifted and traded personalities continuously in Act 2. I can see why Blair Witch was so believable in 1999, even if it takes naïvete bordering on gullible.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) - Rated 25 Oct 2026
Hilarious, frenetic, stylish, inventive, most every scene is some fresh joy. The perfect young millennial pop culture cocktail. Fantastic soundtrack, amazing cast, sizzling synergy in each scene. VFX are sometimes dated, some scenes are impossibly cool and memorable, doing both comics and anime justice. The plot barely exists, and is at its best hyping up dramatic moments, and at worst, gets in the way of the more entertaining cutaways and side gags. Maybe my 5th viewing, just as funny too.

Evil Dead (2013) - Rated 22 Oct 2026
After the prologue, it shows all the stripes of a run of the mill coed horror movie, stilted dialogue, and predictable setup included. By contrast, the rest has little to no CG, sexual fanservice, nor an abrupt or cheap ending, but an orchestrated fountain of blood and adrenaline. I cringed and twitched several times throughout!

Troy (2004) - Rated 22 Oct 2026
Director's Cut. You want an ensemble cast, big sets, production value, and unabashed machismo in a no-frills action romp? You got it. Don't ask for more, because the most you'll get is O'Toole in the only substantive emotional beat in the film.

The Brink of War (2026) - Rated 22 Oct 2026
The historical reenactment of diplomatic negotiations is more entertaining than I assumed. It still feels like a Hallmark movie, with people exchanging cheesy quotes and utterly irrelevant, worthless subplots involving immature staffers and First Lady catfights. The two leads aren't bad, but their performances are just a bit off, with British leaking into a Russian accent and Daniels not quite filling the shoes of Reagan. While still heavily biased, American hypocrisy and foibles are shown.

Akira (1988) - Rated 22 Oct 2026
4K dub. I go back and forth whether this film is great or just solid, and the latter wins out this time. It still looks fantastic, but some parts still have shudder or oddly low frame rate which I'd hope a remaster would fix. The story can feel messy or boring, but ultimately it's a decent Loser Turned Psycho flick. Animation, music, style, superb. There's no taking those away.
