"Origin story of the Predator? Origin story of Aubrey Plaza, rather? That actress is a dead ringer. ... Damn it. The Half-in-the-Bag guys beat me to the joke, apparently. I enjoyed it, but would have preferred if the computer-generated stuff was left to the alien stuff, and not to snakes and rodents and the like."

"I really enjoy films like this, in which mundane frustrations expose deep societal problems. It feels a bit like a shorter, more workmanlike Wang Bing movie. It's true that this isn't as impressive from a filmmaking point of view, but it's still very much worth watching. I know so many people who insist on clinging to a romantic view of decolonization, when for many countries in central Africa it's been a mess."

"This feels like an homage to Peter Brook's Lear, and for that I liked it. This movie is less concerned with what its viewership thinks than with working out its own interpretation of the source material, by which I mean just that it's not trying to entertain you. The casting of Telemachus was a mistake, but other than that, quite solid."
