Blue Heron (2026) - Rated 20 Aug 2026
I can see why this is interesting to analyse, but I found the actual experience of watching it much less rewarding. It is slow and low on events, but the bigger problem was that the characters never became engaging enough and the film kept giving me too little new information. The reflective, memory-driven structure did not compensate for that, and by the end I felt there was too little payoff for the time invested.

All of a Sudden (2026) - Rated 20 Aug 2026
Very long, very talky, and not especially driven by plot, but I was surprised by how well it held my attention. The conversations themselves were engaging, the characters were interesting to spend time with, and I especially liked the two female characters. A good reminder that a slow film does not necessarily feel slow when the people and dialogue are compelling.

Minotaur (2026) - Rated 20 Aug 2026
The premise sounds much more gripping than the film ultimately felt to me: marital betrayal, war, politics, violence and a cover-up all suggest a strong dramatic engine. But once the central idea became clear, the later developments did not add enough new information or complexity. The final manoeuvre felt a little too convenient, and overall the film struck me as surprisingly conventional and somewhat old-fashioned.

Project Hail Mary (2026) - Rated 20 Aug 2026
Almost a perfect film for me. Grace’s character arc is beautifully handled: he goes from someone unwilling to risk himself to someone who ultimately chooses to turn back and save Rocky. I also loved how the adaptation rewards readers with tiny visual details — sometimes just a one-second shot — that immediately connect back to moments from the book. And the imagination behind Rocky and the alien world is wonderful: strange, distinctive, funny and genuinely memorable. Hugely entertaining from ... - Full Review

Coward (2026) - Rated 20 Aug 2026
A remarkably accomplished film. What impressed me most was its depiction of war: it rarely needs graphic images of bloodshed to convey the enormous pressure war places on ordinary people, or the way patriotism can be used to send young men to die while those in power remain comfortable and entertained. I also loved the tension between the two lovers — one wanting the war to continue because it allows their brief happiness to survive, the other desperate to escape and unwilling to remain compl... - Full Review
